Founded by Graham Isaac and Adam Sillman, 'The Crunch' began life as a spoken word night hosted in Swansea, Wales. Held on the second and third Thursdays of each month between December 2008 and October 2012, the night played host to everyone from poetry slam sluggers to Wales Book of the Year winners, with the occasional experimental theatre troupe thrown in for good measure.
Throughout its run as an open mic platform, The Crunch sought to bring people together, like-minded or otherwise, inviting them to become part of an inclusive and supportive artistic community. It nurtured new voices, placing them alongside voices already established, with the hope that horizons would be broadened across the board. Following an unintended three-year hiatus, The Crunch returned in October 2015 in the form a multimedia poetry magazine, curated by original founder Adam Sillman, alongside Richard James Jones and Rhys Owain Williams. Retaining the spirit of the original incarnation, The Crunch remains an inclusive platform that pays no heed to bibliography or honour roll, instead choosing to focus on writing that promotes discussion and broadens horizons. |
